As of May 2024, the average cost of solar panels in Flagstaff is $2.62 per watt making a typical 6000 watt (6 kW) solar system $11,007 after claiming the 30% federal solar tax credit now available.
This is lower than the average price of residential solar power systems across the United States which is currently $3.00 per watt.
The size of a solar panel system also plays a role in how much the installation will cost.
Larger solar installations will typically have a lower cost per watt, because the panels can be purchased at a ‘bulk price’. However, these larger solar systems will still have a higher total cost, because they are made up of more individual panels.

Arizona Solar Wave was very thorough when installing the panels on top of the house. They guided me through the process of getting all the necessary paperwork into the various HOA's and APS. The only problem now is understanding the Enphase Energy System and getting it set up properly. Once this gets set-up, my experience will be 5 stars.

Starting in May 2023 I began researching the addition of a roof-top solar power system for my home in Tucson. I evaluated many equipment suppliers and installation companies. Based on the quality and efficiency of the solar power components and the stellar reputation of the installation company I selected SunPower as the component supplier and Renova Energy as the local installation company. My local sales person, Doug Skordal, was very knowledgeable, completely honest and patient with our decision process. My wife and I signed a contract with Renova in late October and had a complete, fully permitted and operational solar power system by February. I am completely satisfied with the quality of the components and the installation work (all of it done by Renova employees). They even went so far as to match the paint color in the interior of my garage so that the electrical conduit would be less conspicuous. I can recommend SunPower and Renova to anyone looking for a quality solar power system without reservation. They are the good guys.

Black Platinum installed my Solar System and had it commissioned in 2008: 40 Solar Panels delivering 8.4KW of power. Last month, I had to have the 25 year-old roof replaced. No roofing contractor could handle the complications inherent with Solar Panel removal before, and replacement after, the new roof was installed. Black Platinum Solar & Electric, however, stepped up to the plate and managed the complete job with astonishing speed and completeness. To me, it was like John Black loaded the bases with his team . . .then, smashed a Homer. Thank you, Black Platinum Solar & Electric. Ron Wagner Surprise, AZ

In reading the one star ratings…I am totally perplexed. Sunny Energy is one of the best contractors I have experienced in a long time. As a licensed general contractor…..I know subs and Sunny is top notch. From the sales cycle to setting expectations, scheduling and installation it was as smooth a process as one can imagine. We were notified of every step along the way from permitting to each step of the install as to what to expect. The techs were top notch and very detail oriented. They worked efficiently and left the site immaculate each time they were out. A big shoutout to the entire Sunny Team! What a great experience.

We contracted w/ TFS at the end of 2019. Then the pandemic hit and we weren't sure what was going to happen to our business. TFS was willing to put the solar installation on hold until we were ready, no pressure to move forward. We eventually got back on track and had our solar installed. It works great! Our electric bill last month (July) was $18.

It doesn't get any better than this. Net Zero's entire staff is super professional know what they are talking about and will astound you with their customer service. They took care of the County permitting, co-ordination with my current electricity provider, specs, diagrams, etc. Don't bother looking at other companies. Net Zero is the best. Chad, Trace, and Louis know what they are doing and have trained their staff to perfection. I'm happy to recommend them to the fullest extent.

We highly recommend Sun Valley Solar Solutions. We selected Sun Valley after reading extensively and interviewing six firms. Sun Valley stood out for providing unfailingly accurate, credible and useful information. We liked that Sun Valley is a local company with roots and a solid presence in Arizona and many years of solar experience. We're now operational and can say that every step of the way, Sun Valley confirmed that we made the right choice. Every Sun Valley person we worked with through the proposal, design, installation, and commissioning impressed us with their knowledge and commitment to getting the details right. All were wonderfully agreeable to boot. Thanks so much to Sam and Adrianne, and forgive us for not calling out each other contributor by name! Thanks to you all!

Straight talk, no jive, no hard sell, no hidden details. Best price (on best quality components) among half a dozen that I talked to. I was able to pay cash avoiding the extra cost and hassle of a loan or lease. Good workmanship, showed up when they said they would. System has worked well and I haven't paid APS a dime since it was installed end of September. These guys are a fine local company, I have only good things to say about them.

Where there is no specific pricing information available for a brand then we have used state pricing data for that brand.
Solar panel manufacturer | Avg. cost per watt |
---|---|
Canadian Solar | $2.46 |
LG Solar | $2.88 |
SunPower | $3.01 |
Panasonic | $2.91 |
LONGi Solar | $2.38 |
The most important difference between buying solar panels and any other purchase is that solar panels last 25-30 years. This is a long, long time and you will need customer service over all that time. The reviews below of the two largest corporate solar installation companies indicate larger corporate solar companies are not delivering this support to their customers.
We recommend you find a small or mid-size, local, family-owned solar company. These companies tend to care more about you and your specific job. You don't want to be on hold to a corporation's call center for the next 25 years!
The cost of solar doesn't just include the equipment and installation costs - it’s also made up of permitting costs, inspection costs, and installer profit margins.
These different components are what make the price of solar fluctuate between installations. Some of the factors that affect solar power system installation costs for specific homes include:
Homes that use more electricity will need more solar panels to cover their energy needs.
Although solar panels do get cheaper on a per-watt basis, the overall cost of the system will increase as more panels are added.
But, the higher a home’s energy usage, the more solar panels can save the homeowners on their energy bills.
The price of solar panels can vary depending on the type of solar panels you choose.
There are two main types of solar panels for residential solar installations: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. Monocrystalline solar panels tend to be more efficient and more expensive than other solar panels. Polycrystalline panels have a lower efficiency rating and come at a lower price point.
The type of inverter you buy will also influence the cost of your solar system.
You may see some solar quotes with prices that seem too good to be true.
If you get quoted for a ridiculously cheap price, the installer might be using low-quality equipment or an unsustainable pricing model. You want to use a solar installer that is charging enough so that they can stay in business - as you’ll be relying on them for the next 25 years!
It’s important to make sure that your installer is giving you the best quality at the best price possible. This is why getting multiple solar quotes is so important.
The overall cost of solar can be influenced by the solar incentives available.
Across the U.S., homeowners can apply for the federal solar tax credit. The solar tax credit makes installing solar more cost-effective by providing homeowners with a tax credit equal to 30% of the cost of their installed solar panel system.
Local solar tax incentives and rebates can end up saving homeowners thousands on a solar installation, especially when they’re used with the federal solar tax credit.
See what solar incentives are available in your area by using our solar panel calculator.
The cost of installing residential solar panels in Flagstaff varies with the brand of solar panels and inverters you choose, the installation company you choose to install them, the relative ease or difficulty of installing solar panels on your home, and of course the amount of solar panels you need. The amount of solar panels you need is, in turn, related to your energy usage.
The table below shows the data extracted from a real life quote delivered through the SolarReviews marketplace recently for a fairly typical home in Flagstaff.
As you can see the payback period is relatively short and equates to a much better return on investment than he historical returns that have been available from investing in things like shares or property.
System information | Value |
---|---|
System Size (for 100% usage offset) | 9.4 kW |
Annual power generation | 11,715 kWh |
Pay-back time (assuming Cash purchase) | 9.2 Years |
Internal rate of return (IRR) on investment | 6.7% |
Gross cost | $24,035 |
Total Upfront Incentives and Rebates | -$6,249 |
Net Cost of System after rebated and incentives | $17,787 |
Total Cost of Utility Power Avoided over 25 years | $61,992 |
Please note that the investment return figures do not include the possible increase in property value
